Substantiated maltreatment includes the dispositions of substantiated, indicated, or alternative response-victim. States vary in their definition of abuse and neglect. Rows total more than 100 percent since a single child may be the victim of multiple kinds of maltreatment. The category of unknown includes missing children and children older than 17 years.
